Flags from different countries adorn the halls of Patrick Henry
The Patrick Henry High School foreign language department celebrated National Foreign Language Week March 7 - 11. The classrooms were labeled in French, Latin and Spanish. Students created flags, maps, and coins to adorn the halls, the bulletin boards, and the foreign language classrooms as well. The morning announcements included an English word that originated from another language.
In addition, the student body could participate in a variety of activities throughout the week. There was a trivia question each day. Any student could enter their answer at the library. A name was drawn from the correct entries and the winner received a prize pack. The department sponsored a poster contest among the foreign language students. The poster had to reflect this year's theme: Around the World in Seven Days. This year's winner was Courtney B.. Students could also earn extra credit for wearing a foreign language shirt on Friday, and many classes created crafts from other countries such as Guatemalan worry dolls.
The school staff was invited to compete in a foreign language trivia competition, and gift certificates were awarded to Abby Q. for Spanish, Ann W. for Latin, and Jean H. for French. Each language provided a taste testing for the faculty also. French provided food on Wednesday, Latin on Thursday and Spanish on Friday.
