Students sit on the floor, sit on a stage, and stand on a stage. A large "check" is being handed to a lady. A dark curtain hangs behind them in the background. Meadowview Elementary first graders present a check to the Red Cross.

In December 2011, Meadowview Elementary's first grade chose not to trade gifts for the Christmas Holidays; instead they decided to give to others. Students brought money to be donated to the Red Cross. The Red Cross was chosen because of the tremendous help they gave to the Glade Spring community last April, after the terrible tornadoes swept through. Many of the students themselves were helped by the Red Cross; others knew someone who had been helped by the organization. Supplies as simple as water, food, and hand sanitizer were provided during the tornado's aftermath, which helped students realize how important these things can be when people don't otherwise have access to them. The first grade raised over $200.00 for the Red Cross. By helping others, the students learned an important lesson at a very good time of year: it is truly better to give than to receive.
