A group of nine students gather around a cake. Emma C. presents her project, a cake displaying elements of the novel, to the class.

The Wallace Middle School sixth grade students brought the novel “Freak the Mighty” alive by creating visual representations of various aspects of the novel. While reading “Freak the Mighty” and enjoying the adventures of the characters Max and Kevin, the students analyzed the literary elements, extended their vocabulary development, and used various reading and writing strategies.

In October, hands-on projects were brought to class as a culmination of the novel study unit. Students also used the novel toward earning the Wallace Middle School Varsity Letter for Reading Award. Some projects included dioramas, ornithoptors, pyramid presents, and character models. The most popular project was made by Emma C. It was a large cake decorated with various elements from the novel. Mrs. Mullins would like to congratulate her students on a job well done!
