The School Board of Washington County, Virginia, invites applications for the position of Superintendent. The School Board is seeking a highly qualified superintendent to lead the school system in its pursuit of educational excellence for every child. The starting date will be on or near July 1, 2013.

The School Board will begin receiving applications on October 1, 2012, and will continue to receive applications until the position is filled. The Board anticipates beginning the review of applications on November 1, 2012, and conducting first interviews around November 15, 2012. Candidates must meet the qualifications for the Eligibility List of Superintendents in Virginia. A doctoral degree or progress toward a doctorate is preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate ability and success in:

  • Educational leadership that promotes an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect throughout the system as well as continuous improvement in instruction and curriculum;
  • Development and administration of long- and short-term planning, budgeting, and facility development;
  • Effective communication, motivation and team building among staff as well as community members;
  • Fostering community partnerships and alternative resource development;
  • Maintaining safe school environments;
  • Modeling strong personal and professional ethics in leadership capacities, preferably as a school superintendent or assistant superintendent, with additional experience as a classroom teacher and principal.

The candidate selected must agree to become a resident of Washington County within 90 days of assuming the position.

Washington County School System serves approximately 7,404 students in PK- 12 with a staff of approximately 1,031 in seven elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools as well as a career and technical center. Washington County is a large, rural county nestled in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. The total population of the county is approximately 54,827 and contains the three small towns of Glade Spring, Damascus, and Abingdon, the county seat.
