Initiatives for 2014-2015

  • All schools will obtain full accreditation by the Virginia DOE.
  • One hundred percent of WC students will earn a diploma following the completion of an appropriate program of study.
  • Washington County Schools (WCS) will increase the number of students earning industry certificates and verified credits in career and technical education courses.
  • WCS will expand on-line and blended learning opportunities for all students.
  • Emphasis will be placed on integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) into the curriculum.
  • Upgrade and expand wireless coverage to provide opportunities to explore 1-to-1 pilot programs and Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) initiatives.
  • School safety will continue to be a primary focus.
  • Continued identification of preschool students in need of early intervention will ensure future academic success.
  • WCS will evaluate and restructure pay scales for all employees.
  • Continued emphasis will be placed on the improvement of the division’s math programs and student achievement on the corresponding Standards of Learning assessments.
  • Enrichment opportunities will be provided for all students. Specifically designed programs will be offered to those students identified through the GATE program.
  • GPS tracking systems will be installed on all new buses.
  • WCS Maintenance Department will continue installation of efficient heating/AC systems and interior lighting upgrades.
  • A division-wide focus on STEM, especially at the elementary level, will provide students with opportunities for problem solving and critical thinking.
  • A successful implementation of the lesson plan template for teachers in the division will ensure standards being taught at an appropriate level of rigor.
  • The division will provide professional development opportunities for teachers in effective instructional strategies.
  • Interactive Achievement will be used to analyze student assessment data and inform instruction.
  • WCS will review and approve new Foreign Language textbooks.
  • WCS will screen all 2nd grade students for possible inclusion in the Gifted Education Program.
  • Wireless upgrades for elementary schools.
  • Redesign and reorganization of district website and updates for all school websites.
  • WCS will encourage reading at home by providing free books to children through services provided by a new bookmobile.
