After connecting at least one computer to every classroom, we moved toward facilitating the use of mobile computer labs that could be set up anywhere in he school. Wireless access points have been placed in all of the high, middle, and elementary schools in order to enable multiple mobile labs to be placed in each of these schools.
A 50Mbps Metro Ethernet feed from Embarq feeds the school board office in Abingdon, Virginia. Six of our schools are connected to the school board office through 10 Mbps connections to Bristol Virginia Utilities. Eight other sites connect to the school board office through 100 Mbps connections to Embarq.
We use a wide variety of equipment in our networking although we are working to standardize the brands and models for ease of administration. Currently, we use a mixture of Cisco, Dell, and HP switches and Cisco routers.
Each school has a Novell Netware 6.5 server that is used for administration. These servers are all in the same eDirectory tree and linked via our WAN connectivity.
