AES Students Celebrate National Chemistry Week at Eastman Chemical Company

AES student stands next to podium to receive award for t-shirt designFourth graders at AES spent a “sweet” day at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport on October 28 to help celebrate National Chemistry Week.  The theme for this event was “The Sweet Side of Chemistry – Candy”.

The students rotated to several different stations where they were entertained by spectacular experiments and investigations.  The experiments ranged from finding out how to drive a nail in a board with a banana to how a get your hair to stand up on your head.  One of our students had a very special part of the celebration.  There was a contest to create a design for the T-shirts to be worn by about 1,500 students attending the event.  One of Abingdon Elementary’s fourth grade students, Makaleigh J., had the winning entry. We are very proud of her. She is shown in the picture with her T-shirt she designed.  As our students say, science is very exciting and interesting.  Our visit to Eastman Chemical Company was a good example of how fun science can be.
