Damascus Middle School SCA Gets Students Involved

Two students stand by a wall of hearts. The Damascus Middle School Student Cooperative Association (SCA) has been working to get DMS students involved!  On Friday, February 17, the SCA led the student body in the 24/7 Campaign.  This is a movement to “make schools in Virginia tobacco-free twenty-four hours a day seven days a week,” according to the website.

The Washington County Public School System has had a tobacco-free policy for several years; however, this campaign is meant to communicate this policy to students and to provide feedback about students’ understanding of the policy.  During their lunch blocks, students pledged to follow the policy, creating a large 24/7 poster with their post-it note pledges.  In addition to helping DMS become more aware of our tobacco-free policy, the efforts of the SCA paid off with a reward of $247!  DMS is proud of the efforts of the SCA to create a healthy environment!

The SCA also sponsored the Hearts for the House campaign, a fundraising drive to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.  The Ronald McDonald house provides housing for families of sick children who have to stay in the hospital long-term.  DMS students raised $600 for Hearts for the House!  Top individual fundraisers were Brycen S. ($75 winner), Randy N. ($50 winner) and Noah S. ($25 winner).  Top homeroom was Mrs. Blackburn’s homeroom, and each student receives a McDonald’s Happy Meal!  Second and third place homerooms were Mrs. Caywood’s and Mrs. Musick’s homerooms, and each of their students receives a McDonald’s dessert.  SCA sponsors are Mrs. Lisa Blackburn and Mrs. Amy Caywood.
