DMS GATE Students Experience Life as Military Personnel

A group of students sitting on a beach.Damascus Middle School GATE students recently visited Charleston, South Carolina where they spent five days on an aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown.  Students were treated like true military and had to sleep in the original berthing quarters, eat in the mess hall, and were awakened each morning early to reveille and retired each evening to the playing of "Taps."

While in Charleston, students toured the aircraft carrier, viewed many aircraft used in several wars,  toured a submarine and several war exhibits, visited a southern plantation, toured the city, and went on a day ECO trip and learned about the aquatic life of Charleston. This trip was a lifetime experience for all!  The GATE Coordinator is Rhonda Mossholder.
