Glade Spring Middle School Remembers Our Veterans
Fri, November 21, 2014
Glade Spring Middle School held its annual Veterans Day Program on November 10. The Student Council Association led by sponsors, Mrs. Sherry Cannon and Mrs. Colleen Buchanan, arranged a program of music, guest speakers, and honors for local Veterans.
The program began with Abigail B. leading “The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag”. The Chorus, under the direction of Mr. David Carroll, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “Patriotic Medley”, and “Wind Beneath My Wings”. Mr. Pete Marcum and Mr. Bob Ballengee, band directors, and the GSMS band continued the program with the playing of “America the Beautiful”. Patriot’s Pen Essay winners, Casey Q., Drew M., Catherine G., and Emily T. read their essays entitled, “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans”. The guest speaker for the day was Rear Admiral Jones H. Stanley, U.S. Navy, retired. The band performed “US Armed Forces Medley”, a compilation of the official songs and hymns of each branch of the military, while veterans stood during the song representing their branch of service. Members of the Crooked Road Cloggers, Nataile W., Ashlynn L., and Hannah G. performed. Gifts were presented to the oldest Veteran in attendance and the Veteran with the most years of service.
This year, GSMS students have started a new project to honor local veterans in the form of a memorial garden on the school grounds. For many years, Mr. Clifford McKinney, father of Mrs. Colleen Buchanan, was the oldest veteran in attendance at the annual Veterans Day program. Sadly, Mr. McKinney passed away earlier this year. As a special tribute in his memory, a tree will be planted in the Veterans Memorial Garden. Mr. Carl McKinney, son of Clifford McKinney came forward to accept the tree on the family's behalf. Veterans and other guests were invited to enjoy cake and refreshments. Carlee T. and Gracie H. closed the program with the playing of “Taps”. The program was a wonderful way to show Veterans that Glade Spring Middle School is proud of them.
