Girl standing in front of a book shelf. Each year the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has their annual essay contest for students in grades 5-8. The 2016 – 2017 essay contest topic was “Celebrating a Century: America's National Parks”.

Students were to pretend they were writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks. They were to identify the park location and then discuss what makes the park one of our national treasures. The essay written by eighth grade student Carlye M. about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, took first place in the contest among all eighth grade entries. Congratulations to Carlye! We are very proud of you and your outstanding accomplishment.
