Wallace Middle School Students Create Their Own Island

Seven students stand in front of their island projects.Ever thought about living on your own island?  Students in Mrs. Johnson's math classes at Wallace Middle School designed, created, and named their own island.  This hands-on activity helped to make this VA Standard of Learning come to life.

The students worked in groups to create their own scale-drawing of an island. They were given certain criteria to follow as they designed the island.  The students worked together to ensure that they met the directions given to them.  They applied their understanding of this standard as they designed and colored their islands on graph paper.  As they worked on their islands, they gained an appreciation of a map scale and key.  After this activity, the students understood the importance of scale models and drawings.
