Washington County Schools Hold Division-wide Spelling Bee

Four adults and two children holding trophies standing in front of a stage.On Tuesday, January 20, 2015 spelling bee winners from the seven elementary schools competed in the annual elementary school spelling bee. School representatives were:  Gavin M. (Abingdon Elementary), Jana L. (Greendale Elementary), Ryan M. (High Point Elementary), Ryan W. (Meadowview Elementary), Nathan C. (Rhea Valley Elementary), Colby K. (Valley Institute Elementary), and Jamie L. (Watauga Elementary). The spelling bee was held at Watauga Elementary School.

Amanda Yarber, Coordinator of Federal Programs, Lisa McNeil, Gifted Coordinator, Crystal Peek, Washington County 4H Extension Agent and Ted Casler, Human Resources Manager, served as judges. Sheriff Fred Newman served as pronouncer. After 19 rounds and 84 words, Ryan M. from High Point Elementary School was declared county champion, correctly spelling "aggressive" and "grievance". Jamie L. from Watauga Elementary was the runner up. Ryan is now eligible to move on to the Southern Appalachian Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held in Knoxville, TN in March. Congratulations to Ryan and all of our school spelling bee champions.
