  <title>Patrick Henry High School Hosts 2012 Prom</title>

  <description>On April 21, 2012, Patrick Henry High School students attended the 2012 Prom at the Virginia Ballroom in Abingdon, Virginia.  The theme was based on the Michael Jackson and Akon song Hold My Hand, and the colors were black, white, and yellow.  Many students were involved in planning this event, including the junior sponsor, Mrs. Tammy Snapp, the  prom committee members, and many students in Mrs. Hick’s art classes.  Juniors Carlie M. and Tyler S. were crowned Prom Princess and Prom Prince respectively.  Prom Queen was Casey K., and Prom King . . .</description>

  <description>The Wallace Middle School Girls on Track Club had an outstanding spring!  With a team of 25 to 30 girls from grades 6th, 7th, and 8th, much was learned about running, exercise in general, good eating habits, getting along with others, and being part of a "team."  These girls learned the important basics of running - warm-up, stretching, and agilities - over the 8 week period and how to apply and use these basics in their lives.  On May 5th, three of the girls went on to compete in the Animal Chase Creeper Trail Run along with Coach Patti Turpin. . .</description>

  <description>Steve Ahn, Abingdon High School science/biology teacher, has been selected as one of eight educators statewide to receive the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.  The award was created to honor outstanding Virginia public school teachers for dedication and commitment to students.  This program is sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA, and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies.  on May 8, Mr. Ahn received a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies.   <title>Wallace Middle School Student Takes First Place in T-Shirt Design Contest</title>

  <description>Wallace Middle School art students recently participated in a t-shirt
design contest that ended during National School Breakfast Week which
was held March 5th through March 9th. Students had the opportunity to
create their own school breakfast t-shirt design highlighting the
benefits of eating a healthy breakfast. A first, second, and third
place winner was selected from elementary, middle, and high school

  <description>On May 3, 2012, members of the United Way of Russell and Washington
Counties held a Tornado Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for individuals
and groups who assisted with the Tornado Recovery efforts over the
past year.    The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Grand
Ballroom was full of volunteers who gave of themselves, with time,
effort, and money, in order to help our community rebuild after last

  <title>Second Graders at Watauga Invite Guest Speakers</title>

  <description>Watauga Elementary second graders recently completed a unit on famous
Americans.  The students are always intrigued by Helen Keller, an
individual who was able to accomplish so much despite being deaf and
blind.

As a culminating activity, teachers invited Beverly and Gene Williams,
grandparents of McKinzie W., to visit second grade.  While Mr.
Williams has limited hearing, his wife is deaf.
The couple shared some of their past jobs.  Mrs. Williams has worked
at Warner Brothers Studio and Capitol Records in California. Mr.

  <title>Meadowview Students Remember One-Year Anniversary of Tornado</title>

  <description>On April 27, on the one-year anniversary of the tornados that affected
many of our families and friends in the area, Meadowview Elementary
students helped to plant a tree in memory of Mr. Bobby Blevins, a
victim of the storm. These students were part of the efforts of the
United Way of Washington and Russell County to replace trees destroyed
by the tornado. This effort to plant trees is taking place across the
county as part of the Support Relief program. By planting the tree
donated by the family of Mr. Blevins, these students were part of the. . .</description>

  <title>Watauga Elementary Receives a Butterfly Garden</title>

  <description>Brownie Troop #185 built a beautiful butterfly garden outside the
windows of the second grade at Watauga Elementary.  This was an effort
to “give back” in honor of Earth Day. The girls, their parents,
families and teachers recycled aluminum cans for two months.  The cans
were cashed in at the local recycling center, and all the money raised
along with parent donations was used to build the butterfly garden.
The girls learned that habitats for this beautiful animal are
disappearing due to construction sites and climate changes.  The
