Accomplishments for 2008-2009
- The Washington County School Division was presented the Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award for exceeding the minimum requirements for learning and achievement of the Commonwealth’s rigorous SOL program.
- Eighty percent of Washington County Schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). (Seventy- one percent of Virginia schools met this benchmark.)
- All schools met state accreditation standards. Phase I construction of the facility plan was completed.
- On-line course offerings were expanded at the secondary level from seven courses to nineteen courses.
- The number of students passing industry certifications and earning student selected verified credits in Career and Technical Education courses increased from 384 to 470.
- Staff development opportunities were provided that concentrated on differentiation of instruction.
- Self evaluation of the school improvement process was conducted through in-house visits to selected schools.
- E. B. Stanley Middle School was designated as a “National School to Watch.”
- All 6th grade students participated in a Watershed Environmental Education experience.
- Community agency intervention programs provided academic support in all elementary and middle schools.
- Two additional School Resource Officers were added through a partnership with the Town of Abingdon Police Department.
- A workplace soft skills program was implemented in all high schools with business and industry partners.
- Three elementary schools received the Governors Excellence Award for academic achievement.
- Four elementary schools have been designated as “Title I Distinguished Schools.”
