|Rhea Valley Students Participate in Hour of Code||12-19-2016||
Fourth and fifth grade Rhea Valley Elementary students participated in the Hour of Code on December 7th and 9th. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week which was December 5-11. It is a global initiative of Code.org dedicated to increasing the awareness and understanding of computer science. Millions of students from around the world participate in the event each year.
|VDOT Official Speaks to Holston FBLA||12-16-2016||
Carl Reedy, the Assistant VDOT District Administrator for Washington County and the surrounding area, recently spoke to the HHS Future Business Leaders of America. Mr. Reedy had the honor of being a faculty member at Holston when the school opened in 1964. He remained there for the next four years, teaching Biology and coaching. Mr. Reedy made a career change after his time as a teacher, transitioning into the Virginia Department of Transportation. There he worked his way up the career ladder. He now has one of the most prominent jobs in the department.

Congratulations to the John S. Battle Cross-Country team on a great 2016 season!!! With three of the top five graduating this past May, the Girls' team had to look to rebuild.

The GES News Crew had the privilege of touring the WCYB News studio with WCYB Sports Director, Casey Goetz on Thursday, December 8. Students were able to tour the production studio, news room and studio while meeting several WCYB staff who work behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Wallace Middle School officially kicked off the fall season with a Fall Bash on Friday, October 14. The students enjoyed an afternoon filled with music, games, and several different inflatables.

On Thursday, November 10, Watauga Elementary School proudly honored our nation’s heroes, our veterans. Third grade students donned patriotic clothing in red, white, and blue. Some even wore military costumes or costumes that resembled famous Americans and symbols like Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, and Betsy Ross.

Have you ever become a human lightning rod, experienced the feel of weightlessness, or been caught in a category one hurricane? That’s exactly what the fifth graders at High Point Elementary School were able to experience this month when they visited WonderWorks in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

On Friday, November 11th, the first graders at Abingdon Elementary celebrated Veterans Day with some very special guests! The fathers of two of our first grade students came to share with us about what it is like to be a veteran. Mr. Marcus Ball and Mr. Byron Sargent both served in the Marines and Army Reserves!

Valley Institute Elementary held their school wide spelling bee on November 18th. The bee was very competitive and lasted 16 rounds!
