Damascus Middle School Student Kai B. Wins Art Contest 04-25-2016

A self-portrait done with ebony pencil.Damascus Middle School eighth-grade student Kai B. was recently named the middle school division winner in the county-wide Virginia School Boards Association Art Contest.  His self-portrait, based on a 5 x 7 black and white photograph taken by his art teacher Ms. Jennifer Smith, is an ebony pencil drawing created using the grid method.

Culinary Arts Bake the Competition at District SkillsUSA 04-20-2016

Three girls who won a culinary competition stand beside each other. Culinary Arts students recently competed in the annual District VIII SkillsUSA Commercial Baking competition.  The competition was a timed event requiring each student to prepare multiple baked items including: yeast breads, muffins, cakes, pies, cookies and muffins.

WES Students Awarded in 4-H “Share the Fun” Program 04-19-2016

Students standing and holding up their ribbons.Watauga Elementary 4-H members held their annual “Share the Fun” talent program. 18 members from the fourth and fifth grades performed.  Talent acts included: variety, dance, instrumental, drama, combination, and vocal.  Each contestant had four minutes to perform in either an individual or team act.  The youth were awarded points in the following areas: Chosen material, talent, audience response, creativity, showmanship, and their costume and props.

AHS Student Wins Queen of Hearts Crown 04-15-2016

AES Goes North to Alaska 04-14-2016

Teacher standing under a banner.On February 29th, Mrs. Campbell, a 5th grade language arts teacher from Abingdon Elementary School, traveled to Anchorage, Alaska for the Iditarod Winter Teacher’s Conference.  In addition to attending the 4 day teachers’ conference that included STEM and cross-curricular workshops and presentations for using the Iditarod dogsled race in the classroom, Mrs.
Campbell also visited a dog sledding kennel, Iditarod Headquarters, and the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Dogsled Race on March 5th.

GSMS 8th Grade Band Receives Superior Ratings at the VBODA 04-13-2016

The assessment is comprised of performing three selections for three judges, who grade the band on all Virginia band SOLs and rate them accordingly.

DMS Small Animal Care Team Places First in County 04-12-2016
