The Interact Club at Holston High School recently completed a major community service project. In cooperation with Patrick Henry High School, the club launched a friendly competition between their respective first period classes.

The Watauga Elementary School library stirred up some excitement for the coming Book Fair by hosting a creative contest. Students were asked to decorate a pumpkin, gourd, or potato to look like an existing or a completely new superhero.

FE FI FO FUM! Second graders enjoyed the morning with the Barter Players at the Paramount Theater in Bristol. Jack and the Beanstalk, a classic fairy tale, fed the students’ imaginations with golden eggs, a musical magic harp, beanstalks, and an angry giant.

Twenty lucky teachers at Valley Institute Elementary were surprised on the morning of October 15th. Two representatives from Wal-Mart came to reward twenty teachers with $50 gift cards. Valley Institute was chosen as one of the community schools for the Teacher Rewards Program.

Fifth Grade Students Celebrate Reading “Fall in Love with Reading” is the theme that is emanating in the fifth grade hallway at High Point Elementary School. The students are engaged in a novel study of Hatchet, a survival story of a young teenage boy who is stranded after a plane crash.

Damascus Middle School celebrated an “All-American” Spirit Week with Holston High School’s theme of “Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of the Cavalier.” Students dressed up all week, as All-American Heroes and tacky tourists and in red, white, and blue. On Friday, students stood “United as Cavaliers,” proudly wearing red and black!

Students in Mrs. Miller’s English Language Arts class got up close and personal with the Grand Canyon in preparation for reading Downriver by Will Hobbs. They viewed images and maps of the Grand Canyon in 3D on a PowerPoint presentation.

The U.S. History and Government classes at Holston High School recently had the opportunity to hear from and speak with Congressman Morgan Griffith. Griffith, who represents Virginia’s 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, came to HHS on September 21st and spoke with the students for over an hour.
