Abingdon Elementary School Blankets of Blessing 5th Grade Service Project
Post date:
Tue, October 17, 2017
As a wrap up activity for a novel study of How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O’Connor, the 5th grade students at Abingdon Elementary participated in a service project organized by the 5th grade language arts teachers.
In the novel, Georgina, the main character, and her family are homeless. They live in their car and do their best to keep up with school, work, and daily life. The book had many life lessons which included helping others who are in need.
The 5th graders worked with a group called “Blankets over Bristol” to collect new or gently used, clean blankets for homeless or less fortunate individuals. The students collected blankets for two weeks and prepared them for delivery by tying them with ribbon and adding a handwritten note. The classes also worked on two new blankets in class to donate, as well.
“Sometimes the trail you leave behind is more important than the path that lies ahead.” ~ Mookie (from How to Steal a Dog)
