Abingdon Elementary School "I Got You Babe!"

AES Students Hold a model of "Babe, the Blue Ox"Third graders at Abingdon Elementary School ended the school year in their Language Arts classes by reading and studying classic American Tall Tales. They then participated in a STEM activity correlated to each Tall Tale Character.

After reading Paul Bunyan by Steven Kellogg, students then had to design and build a pen out of Popsicle sticks and toothpicks big enough to hold a model of “Babe, the Blue Ox”.  Other STEM activities included building Pecos Bill’s Lasso out of grocery bags, Slue Foot Sue’s Cabin with rolled up paper and cardboard, John Henry’s Train out of toilet paper tubes, and Johnny Appleseed’s Raft with sticks from outside and yarn that could both float AND hold up an apple!  Everyone learned a lot, both about Tall Tales and working cooperatively.  One third grader commented in their STEM log, “Doing these activities shows me that working in groups is really fun and sometimes hard.  When we all get along, all of our ideas just seem to go together and we get things done.”
