Abingdon FFA Members Compete at Virginia State Fair

A group of students standing and holding their ribbons.Several members of the Abingdon FFA chapter competed in various contests at the Virginia State Fair held in Doswell, Virginia.  The Tractor Troubleshooting Contest was held on September 23, 2016 and FFA members Bailey J. and Canan L. qualified to compete at the state contest by placing first in the area contest.

They had to diagnose problems with tractors, complete a written exam, and repair the problems on a tractor.  Bailey and Canan placed 3rd overall in the state contest.  The Junior Foresters Contest was held on September 29, 2016 and team members from Abingdon included Dustin M., Chris D., and Hunter T.  Contestants had to identify trees, equipment, and insects as well as complete measuring exercises.  The team from Abingdon placed 11th overall in the contest.  The Crops Judging contest was also held on September 29, 2016 and members who competed were Dustin M., Chris D., Hunter T., MacKenzie K., Cheyenne L., and Lauren C.  Contestants had to identify crops, weeds, and seeds as well as judge eight classes of crops and seeds.  Team members Dustin M., Lauren C., Chris D., and MacKenzie K. placed 8th overall in the contest.  Ryan G. exhibited market lambs and breeding sheep at the State Fair.  He placed 11th overall in Senior Showmanship and also had a Division Champion Market Lamb.  Ryan also competed in the Sheep Skill-a-thon Contest and placed 7th overall.
