Fractions Are a Sweet Success at GES

Four third graders sit at desks covered with green paper with a number line drawn on it. They place chocolate on the paper to model fractions.Third Grade students at Greendale Elementary School recently had the opportunity to explore fractions on a number line in a unique way! Students first worked as a class to create a number line using graham crackers.

Next, they worked in small groups to model fractions on a number line using chocolate bars. These number lines gave students the opportunity to visualize mixed numbers and to see how different fractions compare to each other. Their number lines can also be used to order fractions and add and subtract fractions. Everyone was excited to create these delicious number lines and they couldn't wait to enjoy eating them after the lesson!
