Glade Spring Middle School GATE Embarks on an Adventure
Thu, February 26, 2015
Glade Spring Middle School sixth graders in the GATE program recently traveled to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee to visit the Titanic Museum and Ripley’s Aquarium. At the Titanic Museum, the students were taken on a tour led by "actual" passengers from the ship! The guides told the students why they were on the ship and what had happened to them.
There were also many artifacts from the wreck, the construction of the ship, and letters from after the disaster. The museum also featured a section on the Vanderbilt family and their connection to the Titanic. This was of special interest as the students had visited Biltmore House just two weeks before. At Ripley's Aquarium, the students took a class on Macro vs. Micro. They had already viewed all of the large species in the aquarium and then they examined microorganisms under microscopes. Finally, the students dissected squids and studied the cardiovascular and digestive systems. They had a blast learning about history and science. Glade Spring Middle School GATE is sponsored by Mrs. Sherry Cannon and Mrs. Colleen Buchanan.
