Greendale Elementary School Wraps Its Halls With Love

A group of students sitting against a wall in a school hallway with decorated boxes in front of them. The students at Greendale Elementary have been very busy this month giving back to their community.  As part of a Service Learning Project, the GATE students led the student body in collecting donations of dental supplies for the Ronald McDonald House in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The fifth grade GATE students composed several Public Service Announcements about the house and how the Greendale community could buy hearts for the house for $1.  All of the hearts were then wrapped around the halls to surround the school with love.  In addition, the GATE students made donation boxes, posters, and researched the wonderful things that the Ronald McDonald House does.  The amazing students of Greendale filled the donation boxes with toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.  To celebrate their hard work the students enjoyed a sock hop dance during their activity block on Valentine's Day.  The students hearts grew stronger through exercise and bigger by giving back to their community.  Mrs. Dwyer, a third grade teacher was interviewed by the GATE students to share her personal experience with the house.  The students loved connecting real people with service learning!
