Holston High School Art Students Enjoy Capstone Tie-Dying Project
Post date:
Mon, July 16, 2018
As an end of the year incentive for a job well done, Holston Art Teacher Jessie Smith allowed her students to experience the colorful world of tie-dying. Students were permitted to use the associated coloring materials to freehand designs on tee shirts, socks, and other articles of clothing.
The practice of using free hand dying methods to create colorful bold patterns on clothing began in the first decade of the 20th century. The practice was relatively isolated until the 1960s when it was renamed tie-dye and became associated with the youth that came of age in that decade. Musical artists such as John Lennon and Jimi Hendricks were photographed in colorful tie-dyed garments.
The students enjoyed the projects and the items they created---particularly shirts---will no doubt be seen in the hallways of Holston when school re-opens this fall.
