Holston High School | Graduate Helps School Karst Club

Person posing with science equipmentDiana Schmidt, a Virginia Tech student, feels right at home in the environmental lab. Diana has accomplished a lot since she graduated Holston High School last year and had to move on from her office as president of the Karst Club.

The club is aimed at getting students outside to experience the natural world, caves in particular. Her love for caving has spilled over into her college experience as she picked up a job working in Dr. Kang Xia's lab of crop and soil sciences. This summer she worked alongside two of her former teachers, Steve Ahn and Aaron Napier, to determine how human activities affect cave streams and springs in Southwest Virginia. Her research was presented at the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium held at Virginia Tech.
