MES Visited by “Spanish Explorers” from Patrick Henry High School
Fri, November 11, 2016
Patrick Henry High School Spanish II students came to Meadowview to represent the early Spanish explorers. 5th grade students acted as the First Americans greeted by the conquistadors. The fifth-grade students had to communicate with the Spanish explorers who had landed on their land.
After the whole group activity, the Spanish students broke the fifth graders into small groups and worked with them teaching them some of the basic Spanish vocabulary. All students were actively engaged. After the activity, students discussed the difficulties trying to communicate with a different language group and what it would have felt like to have been a Native American. Students also discussed the difficulties that we still have with immigrants in our country today with language barriers.
