PHHS: Hike to the top of Virginia!
Fri, April 29, 2016
Twelve students from Patrick Henry High School completed a day hike to Mount Rogers. Monday, April 25th, was beautiful as well as educational for students enrolled in Mr. Thayer’s Natural Resource class who completed a 9 mile hike.
They departed from Massie Gap at Grayson Highlands State Park to the summit and then back to Elk Garden which lies in a saddle area between Mount Rogers and Whitetop. Not only allowing the students the opportunity to actually be on the highest point in Virginia, the activity correlates a number of inter-related subjects such as forestry/plant ecosystems, geology, water quality, weather and much more. Students met thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail from as far away as New York and New Hampshire. They were accompanied by their teachers Mr. Thayer and Mr. Hoffman.
