Second Graders at WES Enjoy Special Guests

newsarticle_20150512_04.JPGSecond graders always enjoy learning about Helen Keller’s remarkable story. For the past few years students have enjoyed a presentation by Beverly and Gene Williams, grandparents of McKinzie W., a fifth grader at Watauga Elementary. While Mr. Williams has limited hearing, his wife is deaf.

The couple explained some of their past jobs, talked about some of the challenges of being deaf, and demonstrated common signs. Students enjoyed signing their names for Mr. and Mrs. Williams and observing McKinzie and her grandparents communicating through sign language. Second graders truly enjoyed the presentation and came away with the realization that deafness doesn’t have to hinder individuals from leading a fulfilling life.
