Third Grade Math – High Point Elementary

A boy creates a shape with marshmallows. At High Point Elementary School students in Mrs. Ratliff and Mrs. Miller’s third grade Math classes explored geometric shapes using only marshmallows and toothpicks.  At first students used these materials to construct plane shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles.

We also created solid figures such as a cube and a square pyramid.  Students discovered in our activity that the marshmallows represented the vertices and the toothpicks represented the edges of each figure.   Students also tried to build a sphere, cylinder, and a cone --this discovery activity opened great class discussion.   The students had so much fun creating these figures, and of course eating the marshmallows when we were finished.
