VIES Second Graders at Valley Build Marshmallow Towers

Four proud second graders stand near a desk where their spaghetti noodle and marshmallow tower is displayed. The second graders at Valley Institute Elementary kicked off the new school year with a team-building activity.  This activity was just one of the many different Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities the second graders will be participating in throughout the year.

This activity required students to work in teams to construct a spaghetti noodle and marshmallow tower.  Each team was given 20 spaghetti noodles, 1 yard of string, 1 yard of masking tape, and 1 marshmallow.  Each team had 18 minutes to design and construct the tallest tower possible.  To make this STEM activity more challenging, the teams had to follow specific requirements during construction.  These requirements were that the tower had to be a free-standing structure and the marshmallow had be placed on the top of the tower in one piece.  There were many different tower designs.  The second graders enjoyed all of the cooperative learning and fun of this STEM activity and are looking forward to more activities throughout the year!
