Wallace Students Win the Design and Engineering Competition in the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl
Tue, April 11, 2017
Five Wallace Middle School students, Alexis C., Parker G., Alex J., Sydney L., and Rachael S., traveled with their coaches to Newport News to represent southwest Virginia in the Regional Science Bowl Competition at the event at Jefferson Lab on March 4. The teams spent the morning in a series of fast-paced round robin matches. Questions covered topics ranging from mathematics and general science to physical science, Earth and space, life science and energy.
Wallace students won the overall design and engineering competitions in the afternoon. The team took first place in one challenge and third place in the second challenge of three competitions, each representing a different type of design or engineering challenge. Different challenges are presented each year. The Department of Energy’s Office of Science manages the program and sponsors the NSB finals. Students were also able to attend the Virginia aquarium where they explored many exhibits and enjoyed IMAX movies about the Galapagos Islands and extreme weather.
