Watauga Elementary School Taking an In-Depth Look at the Way a Plant Grows
Thu, March 16, 2017
Mrs. Covington's 4th grade classes participated in a Science investigation to learn about plants. After introducing the parts of a flower, students were given the tools necessary to dissect lilies, roses, and daffodils.
Working in small groups, the students carefully peeled off the petals to reveal the inside of their flower. After a small cut, the seeds were found deep within each plant revealing the flower's reproductive system. The students enjoyed using their observation skills to compare the types of flowers they were able to dissect. Being able to touch each part of the flower helped them make a connection to the vocabulary introduced in class. This activity made them eager to learn more about plants and many students are excited to plant some flowers of their own.
