WES Fractions in Action!

Students sit in the floor with fraction models.Watauga Elementary third graders are all about fractions! The students have learned that fractions represent parts of a whole. They have learned to identify fractions of models, of sets, and on number lines.

They also learned to add and subtract fractions, order fractions, identify mixed numbers, and compare fractions. Students recently worked in teams using fraction bars to compare fractions. By building models for given fractions, students were able to visually discover which fraction represented the bigger part. Students investigated building equivalent fractions as well. The cooperative learning activity provided hands on learning through discovery and discussion among peers. We learned when everyone does their “part” the “whole” group succeeds!
