Patrick Henry High School is proud to recognize their teacher of the year, Mr. Jared Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell began teaching in 2005 after graduating magna cum laude from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. From 2005-2009, he worked as a long-term sub in Pennsylvania, where he taught gifted pull-out and middle school English. He also co-directed The Music Man and taught senior English. Then, from 2010-2022, he lived in Phoenix, Arizona, where he taught middle school English (grades 6 and 8), science, social studies, ESL, and gifted. He also served as 6th grade department lead and director of children's curriculum at his local church. In 2022, he and his family relocated to Abingdon, VA, to be closer to family, and he currently teaches 9th and 10th grade English here at Patrick Henry High School.

“I believe that teaching is more than grading papers and planning lessons. It is a vocation--a higher calling-- and I cherish the privilege of getting to shape and inspire minds of the future. For example, I love holding Socratic discussions, giving students the opportunity to share ideas. I also love collaboration through project-based learning, review games, and whole-group discussions. One of the joys I have experienced as a teacher is having students tell me that I have impacted or inspired them to become better students or to consider a career in writing or education. Outside of school, I am a husband to my beautiful wife Shaina and a father to my four awesome kids. I also enjoy theatre, watching movies, studying history, cooking, attending church, and, of course, reading and writing whenever I can find time. I am humbled and very grateful for this honor.”

Congratulations Mr. Mitchell!

Good morning Rebel fans! Tomorrow, November 15, our volleyball team will be traveling to Giles HS to play them in the Group 1A State Quarterfinals. This is a very big deal and we are VERY proud of this accomplishment. The team will be leaving PH at 11:15am. We are going to have a mini-parade including law enforcement, rescue squad, and maybe fire department following the team to I-81 through Glade Spring as a send off. I encourage as many Rebel Fans as possible to park at one of the banks in Glade or one of the gas stations/ convenience stores and honk horns, wave, and cheer on our Rebel volleyball team as they leave to compete tomorrow. I would think everyone should be at the Glade Spring locations by 11:15am to be sure not to miss the bus. Thanks so much- Dr. D
