📚🌍 From Glade Spring Middle School to Scotland!

We’re excited to celebrate Glade Spring Middle School Reading Specialist Ms. Pamela Mink, whose writing was recently featured in Dumfries & Galloway Life, a Scottish magazine.

Ms. Mink submitted an article for a writing contest centered around the popular STARZ series Outlander, and her story was selected for publication in the magazine’s June issue! This summer, Ms. Mink traveled to Scotland and met with the magazine’s editor, Andrea Thompson.

Her writing journey isn’t stopping there. Ms. Mink will be featured in an upcoming issue with a special Outlander article, with additional writing projects on the way as she helps promote Buittle Castle, the Balliol Family Association and Buittle Heritage Trust.

We’re proud to see one of our own sharing her passion for writing and history on an international stage!

History Comes to Life: The Aswan High Dam Debate Students stepped into the roles of different historical stakeholders as they explored the debate surrounding the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Using evidence from their research, students developed proposals arguing the consequences of construction of the dam and presented their perspectives to the class in a town hall-style forum. After the role-based discussions students reflected on why the Egyptian government ultimately chose to move forward with construction in 1960. This hands-on activity challenged students to think like historians and geographers by examining evidence, considering different perspectives, and defending their conclusions.

🌎✨ Creating Culture in Spanish Class! ✨🌎 Our students got creative in Spanish class today as they learned about and created Ojo de Dios (God’s Eye)—a traditional Mexican craft with similarities to the concept of a dream catcher. Students explored the cultural background of this colorful craft while using their creativity and hands-on skills to make their own unique designs. 🇲🇽🧶 These beautiful creations will be displayed in the hallway later this month, so be sure to check them out! 👀✨ Learning a language is more than words—it’s experiencing culture, creativity, and connection! 💙

Today, Glade Spring Middle School took time to remember, reflect, and learn as we commemorated the events of September 11. We were honored to welcome Young Marine Trainer David Brooks, who shared information about the Young Marines training program and spoke with our students about the importance of service, leadership, teamwork, and commitment. Throughout the day, GSMS teachers also incorporated meaningful lessons centered on the events and impact of 9/11. In Ms. Chatten’s English class, students learned the remarkable story of Michael Hingson and his guide dog, Roselle, whose trust and teamwork helped them safely escape the North Tower. Students then read September 12: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right and discussed the shift in mood from tension and uncertainty to reassurance and hope. Mr. Henderson's and Ms. Rotton’s social studies classes viewed news footage and heard personal accounts from that day, helping students better understand the events of September 11 and their lasting impact. As we remember those who lost their lives, the heroes who responded, and the countless acts of courage and service that followed, we are reminded of the importance of teaching the next generation about service, resilience, unity, and hope. We remember. We honor. We learn. We are GSMS

Our students and staff celebrated Dolly’s incredible spirit by dressing up, spreading kindness, and coloring butterflies to decorate our school. 🦋🌸

Just like Dolly, we believe in using our gifts to lift others up, make a difference, and leave a little more love wherever we go. 💕

🔬 Density Detectives: Measuring Up! Students in Ms. Cannon’s 8th grade Science class are getting hands-on with density! ⚗️📏 Using cubes made from a variety of materials—including steel, copper, acrylic, and different types of wood—students are measuring mass and volume, collecting data, and using their calculations to determine and compare the density of each material.
