WCPS For Your Information

As we begin to see winter weather make its way into our region, Washington County Public Schools would like to remind staff and families what to expect when weather impacts our normal school schedule.

There are many factors that go into adjusting school schedules due to inclement weather. Student and staff safety are always our top priority. In addition to buses traveling on potentially hazardous roads, we must also consider the large number of teenage drivers commuting to and from school each day.

Existing conditions, forecasted weather, road temperatures, wind chills, and other elements all factor into our decision-making process. For perspective, Washington County has a larger land area than 25 countries and is the largest county south of Staunton, Virginia. With more than 500 square miles – covering over 2,000 miles of county roads and varying by more than 2,500 feet in elevation – no two weather events are ever the same. Each decision is made with care, based on the best information available.

This year our Board approved several pre-determined make-up days, should we miss a day for inclement weather, as part of the school calendar. They are as follows:

  • January 5, 2026

  • January 19, 2026

  • February 16, 2026

  • March 12, 2026

  • March 13, 2026

Schedule Change Options

Schedule changes just for Konnarock, Green Cove, and Taylor’s Valley

  • This can include using a delayed schedule, early dismissal, or being closed completely. Schools work with families in these areas to make up for missed learning.

Two-Hour Delay

  • This decision is made by 5:30 a.m., if not the day before. Childcare will be available at elementary schools from 8:00 a.m. until the start of the school day – transportation must be provided by the parent.

  • Additional information on childcare will come directly from elementary principals.

  • If conditions worsen after a delay is called, a decision to close is made by 7:30 a.m.

Two-Hour Delay:  Buses on Clear Roads Only

  • A list of roads not serviced by buses will typically be shared in this scenario.

Three-Hour Delay

  • This option is seldom used but remains possible under certain conditions.

Remote Learning Day

  • Instruction will take place remotely.

  • Classroom teachers will communicate directly with students and parents about how instruction will be facilitated.

  • No childcare will be provided.

Schools Closed

  • Traditional snow day.

  • When schools are closed due to weather, WCPS will determine whether it is safe to offer childcare at elementary schools based on road conditions.

  • If childcare is offered, meals will be provided for elementary students at those school locations.

  • Details about childcare and meal availability will be communicated as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do buses have tire chains?

Yes.  However, we only use chains to return students home in an unexpected emergency. If chains are required to travel to school safely, we will close schools.

Do you change schedules for low temperatures?

Sometimes.  We begin considering changes when temperatures reach single digits, taking into account wind chill, the capacity to start bus engines, classroom heating, frozen pipes, etc. If it is safe to come to school, we will – school is often the safest and warmest place for many students because they rely on us for meals and other support.

If my road is not being serviced by a bus, will my child’s absence be excused?

Yes.  Parents always have the final say when making safety-related decisions. Schools will work with families to ensure students have the opportunity to make up missed work.

My road is clear. Why do we have an altered schedule?

Washington County covers a large geographic area with significant elevation changes. While roads in some areas may be clear, others can remain hazardous. We make decisions based on countywide conditions to ensure safety for all students and staff.

Yesterday we were closed due to low temperatures, today we were on a two-hour delayed schedule, but the temperature was the same. Why are your decisions inconsistent?

We understand how decisions like the example above can be confusing to our families. The discrepancy could be due to a variety of reasons. Temperatures may be the same at 6:30 a.m. on both days with forecasts of sustained winds for the first day and no wind the second. Day one may have forecasts for low temperatures all day, and day two may expect rising temperatures. It could be related to issues with bus engine heaters, frozen pipes or furnace issues in schools. There are so many variables related to weather related decisions that it is very difficult to compare two separate decisions.

My driveway is covered with snow and ice. Why are we still having school?

We make decisions based on the roads our buses travel. Sidewalk and driveway conditions are not considered in our decision-making process.
