WCPS āBeanā Spotlight: Love and Accountability
As we kick off the school year with our āBe a Beanā theme, weāre celebrating WCPS employees and alumni who are transforming their environments in powerful ways.
Todayās spotlight is on Lawrence Cox, horticulture instructor at Holston High School, and Andrew Greer, a 2025 Holston graduate.
Andrew admitted school wasnāt always his favorite, and that heād rather be outside working with his hands than sitting in a classroom. But Mr. Cox saw something in him! Last year, he made Andrew the greenhouse manager, giving him a role that played to his strengths and boosted his confidence. Growing lettuce in the aquaponics lab became one of Andrewās favorite parts of school, and his attendance went from chronically absent to nearly perfect.
Now, Andrew is giving back to the same school where he discovered his passion and is working as a custodian.

Special Recognition
At tonight's School Board meeting, we celebrated Patrick Henry High School and Holston High School for earning the VHSL 2024-2025 Stay in the Game Award -- an honor recognizing teams that went the entire fall, winter, and spring seasons without a single player ejection.
Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches, and fans for showing what it means to play the right way!

Convocation 2025: Be a Bean!
What a way to kick off the new school year at Washington County Public Schools! Convocation was full of mashed potato races, egg roulette, and plenty of coffee ā but most importantly, it left us with a powerful message inspired by the book The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change by Jon Gordon and Damon West.
Just like potatoes soften in boiling water and eggs harden, coffee beans transform their environment! As we dive into this new school year, letās remember to be like coffee beansāflexible, positive, and ready to create change no matter what comes our way.
During Convocation, we also celebrated our very own WCPS "Beans"ā current employees and proud alums who are living examples of this message. Stay tuned as we highlight and recognize these amazing individuals on our social media pages in the coming days!
Hereās to a year full of growth, resilience, and opportunities to make a difference. Letās keep brewing positive change for our students!

For Your Information:
As many of you are aware, the Town of Abingdonās ongoing Sanitary Sewer Project on East Valley Street and Walden Road will continue into the start of the school year. While the first days back can always feel a little hectic, this construction project may make an already busy time more challenging for some.
We want you to know that we have been working closely with the Town of Abingdon, Abingdon Police Department, and Abingdon Fire Department to help ensure traffic flows as smoothly and safely as possible during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
Schools Impacted:
*E.B. Stanley Middle School
*Abingdon High School
*Washington County Career & Technical Education Center
Traffic Control Support: To assist with traffic management, additional police and fire personnel will be stationed at several key intersections during these times.
*Stanley Street and Thompson Drive
*Boone Street and Main Street
*Tanner Street and Main Street (Morning)
*Tanner Street and Valley Street (Afternoon)
*Pecan Street and Main Street (Traffic will be controlled by the light)
Important Notes:
*If youāre leaving E.B. Stanley Middle School, we recommend avoiding a right turn onto Stanley Street, due to increased congestion. For those of you heading toward East Abingdon, Baugh Lane may be an easier option.
*For all schools, arriving earlier than usual will help ease traffic and reduce stress.
*Please exercise patience and caution as everyone adjusts to the changes.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate these necessary improvements to the Town of Abingdonās infrastructure. With your help, weāre confident we can ensure a safe and efficient start to the school year for all students.
